Behind the Metaphor

Origin of the Sea of Knowledge

Though the metaphor of the sea of knowledge is commonly used in literature and across cultures, my own adaptation of it has taken a rather circuitous journey. This is the story of how the metaphor in The Sea of Knowledge evolved, from a tiny drop of inspiration to the vast sea I envision in my book.

Shortly after I was placed in a more advanced math class in seventh grade, I worked on my application to the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). I wanted a metaphor to describe my exploration of knowledge, and settled on using water in some form. With a somewhat developed metaphor, I explained how, on my own journeys, I explored concepts I would never have been able to dive into in such detail in the classroom.

Though my initial visualization of the pursuit of knowledge was far from the metaphor I use in this book, it was still essential to building my own version of the sea of knowledge. I used rivers instead of a sea—leading to a mostly vertical depth rather than a horizontal dimension—and did not develop the metaphor much further than diving into a river of knowledge of a particular field and exploring its components. But over time, the metaphor began to morph into the one I use today.

Once I realized the massive declines in academic proficiency nationwide, I felt led to make a difference. Therefore, I decided to create a presentation. It was essentially The Sea of Knowledge in a compact form; I introduced the metaphor, the severe academic declines, the stakes, the solution, and a brief description of how it could be implemented. Here, the way I presented the metaphor was quite similar to the way in the book. Nevertheless, I knew that it wasn’t enough; I didn’t think that a “mere presentation” could make the impact I needed, so I put the project off for a while. I never presented it.

However, one day, a fascinating idea popped into my head. What if the answer wasn’t a presentation, but a book? What if I targeted not only students, but also parents and educators? Hence, using the initial presentation as a blueprint, I began outlining my book in late November of 2025. Through several phases of revision, the metaphor has only continued to develop into what exists today.

But why the sea of knowledge in the first place? I could have easily illustrated the adventure of self-directed learning as a hike across mountains or perhaps building a house brick by brick. However, the answer to why I chose the sea of knowledge lies in my key realization that everywhere, there is knowledge to be absorbed. All around the island on which we remain in the physical world, there is knowledge stretching to the horizon, just waiting for you to collect it and bring it back. On this sea of knowledge, you can chart your course. You can dive into the wisdom collected over centuries. You can sail off into the horizon, guided by your glowing compass, your deepest desires to learn.

I cannot think of any other metaphor that says this better.
